Golden Ozzymandria

A bespoke sculpey cake topper I made for a friend’s rehearsal dinner cake, sculpted to the likeness of his bearded dragon, Ozzymandria.

In the end she measured approximately 9.5” long and 5” at its widest point.

One of the references of Ozzy that I used

I used an aluminum wire armature to create stability within the sculpture.

I attempted to use aluminum foil, but found it was too unstable and moveable during the process to properly coat, shape, and rework; it kept coming loose, falling out, or breaking apart.

I used various clay carving and shaping tools for the form and texture, as well as a small metal mesh to texture the skin.

As I did not use aluminum foil, the sculpey was thicker and I had to bake it for longer, a risk for the smallest elements, such as the digits, which luckily did not come to be a problem (though they were a little extra tan).

I then painted the figure thoroughly in a gold spray paint, followed by two coats of acrylic.
